Dr. Juris Simanis addresses wilderness medicine conference on MSK injuries

Juris P. Simanis, a sports medicine physician affiliated with Citizens Memorial Hospital, participated as a speaker during the 2025 Wilderness Medical Society Winter Conference. The event took place in Crested Butte, Colorado, in February.

Dr. Simanis delivered a presentation entitled, "Subacute Treatment of MSK Injuries," where he provided insights into diagnosing and managing injuries such as twisted ankles and knee pain from osteoarthritis. He emphasized the importance of enhancing physical examinations, weighing the benefits and drawbacks of imaging, and developing robust treatment plans.

In addition to his presentation, Dr. Simanis conducted a 2.5-hour workshop on musculoskeletal ultrasound. This session attracted wilderness medicine physicians, advanced practitioners, and emergency responders. He highlighted the role of MSK ultrasound as a portable tool for quick diagnosis, treatment, and stabilization of patients in challenging terrains before extraction.

The conference drew over 500 participants from various parts of the globe. The Wilderness Medical Society, established in 1983, is recognized as a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to medical care in remote and extreme environments.

Dr. Simanis, who has more than two decades of experience, practices at the CMH Sports Medicine Clinic in Bolivar. Certified in both family and sports medicine, as well as musculoskeletal ultrasound medicine, he earned his medical degrees and training through several prestigious institutions, including Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Missouri.

Dr. Simanis is notably an expert in wilderness medicine and achieved the Wilderness Medical Society's "Triple Crown" recognition. His career includes involvement with the Peace Corps in Thailand and contributions at the Orthopedic Traumatological Institute in Latvia.
