Foot health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet often receives less attention compared to other health areas. Dr. Frederick Day, a podiatrist at OCH, emphasizes the significance of foot care, especially for those who are active or on their feet for extended periods.

Dr. Day outlines common foot problems, starting with heel pain, a frequent issue. "Where it hurts matters," he states. Pain locations differ in their implications and treatments, with growth-related causes in children differing from those in adults.

Individuals with diabetes are at high risk for severe foot complications. Dr. Day notes, "Any loss of sensation or circulation can lead to serious consequences, including loss of a toe or limb." He stresses the importance of daily foot inspections.

Bunions, often due to genetics or tight footwear, cause pain and swelling, altering the foot's shape. Dr. Day advises wearing shoes with a wide toe box and limiting high heel use. Ingrown toenails, resulting from improper trimming or tight shoes, also pose significant pain and infection risks. Dr. Day warns that plantar warts, which are contagious, can affect entire families. He suggests trimming toenails straight across and choosing roomy footwear.

In observance of Foot Health Awareness Month, Dr. Day advises, "Take a moment to look at your feet. If something doesn’t look right—like a new spot or a strange color—get it checked." Maintaining healthy feet involves daily washing and drying, especially between the toes, wearing well-fitting supportive shoes, and regular inspection to prevent issues. Stretching and foot strengthening exercises contribute to flexibility and injury prevention.

Persistent pain, swelling, or infections necessitate consulting a podiatrist. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for effective management. A referral to a specialist like Dr. Day might be necessary if foot problems interfere with daily activities.
