For athletes and active individuals, maintaining peak physical condition is crucial for optimal performance and injury prevention. Dr. Brandon Morris, an orthopedic surgeon at OCH with a background in sports medicine, provides insights into safeguarding muscles and joints.

Dr. Morris, who completed an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the University of Kansas and has experience working with the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, shares key strategies for training and injury prevention. He emphasizes the importance of engaging in a dynamic warm-up before exercise to prepare muscles and joints. "Engaging in a dynamic warm-up before exercise of any kind helps prepare muscles and joints," he notes, adding that "gentle stretching of both the upper and lower body enhances flexibility and reduces injury risk." Additionally, he stresses the significance of staying hydrated and maintaining balanced nutrition for energy and recovery.

Recovery plays a vital role in long-term health according to Dr. Morris. "After your workout, allowing the body time to heal and repair is essential," he advises. Techniques such as icing sore areas post-exercise can help alleviate muscle tightness. He also highlights walking as a beneficial low-impact exercise for cardiovascular and joint health, particularly for middle-aged individuals. Resistance training is recommended to strengthen muscles and prevent osteoporosis.

While some injuries are unavoidable during exercise, not all require immediate medical attention. Dr. Morris cautions that if an injury prevents normal activities or if pain persists beyond 12-24 hours, professional evaluation should be sought: “If an injury prevents participation in normal activities or if pain persists beyond 12-24 hours, medical attention should be sought.”

The OCH Gravette ER offers 24/7 care for acute injuries, while non-emergency concerns can be addressed by an OCH provider or clinic.
