Respiratory illnesses have seen an increase in recent years, drawing national attention as both familiar and emerging viruses circulate. COVID-19 continues to be a significant public health issue, but other respiratory viruses like influenza, the common cold, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are also prevalent.

The colder months present particular challenges for respiratory health. As temperatures drop, people tend to spend more time indoors, which can facilitate the spread of viruses. During this period, maintaining good respiratory hygiene is crucial. Regular handwashing, mask-wearing, and staying updated on vaccinations can help reduce risks and keep communities healthier. Dr. Drake Cullum from OCH advises that "patients at higher risk should proceed with extra caution during this time of year. These include: patients with heart disease, diabetes, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease, obesity, age sixty-five and older."

A major challenge in managing respiratory illnesses is distinguishing between different viruses with similar symptoms. The flu, common cold, and COVID-19 often present with overlapping signs, complicating diagnosis for individuals and healthcare providers alike. Dr. Cullum emphasized that "quick and precise diagnosis is essential. This can allow for appropriate treatment, in turn leading to earlier resolution in symptoms, prevention of progression of disease and decrease rate of transmission."

For those experiencing symptoms or who fall into a higher-risk category, seeking medical advice promptly is recommended. Appointments with Dr. Drake Cullum at the OCH Gravette Clinic can be scheduled by calling (479) 787-5221.
