SGF Yields has notified the public of the upcoming Crosswalk Yield Check location for the week of May 6. As part of this safety initiative, three police officers will be stationed at the designated crosswalk for approximately four hours. One officer will be in plain clothing, acting as a pedestrian, while another will serve as a spotter, and the third will be in a patrol vehicle, ready to intervene if drivers fail to yield to the pedestrian.
According to the announcement, drivers approaching the location will be alerted by posted signage indicating the presence of a Yield Check. Those found not complying with the pedestrian right of way will first receive a warning and educational materials. However, repeated violations may result in citations being issued to the drivers. The officers will also address any pedestrians who do not adhere to regulations, providing them with warnings and education to prevent potential risks.
The initiative is made possible through a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation and is a collaborative effort between the Springfield Police Department and the SGF Yields pedestrian safety program under the administration of Springfield Public Works.
