Earlier today, Senator Eric Schmitt held a meeting with Pete Hegseth, President Trump's nominee for Secretary of Defense. Following their discussion, Senator Schmitt released a statement outlining the key topics they addressed.

Senator Schmitt emphasized their mutual focus on reforming the Department of Defense. He stated, "It was great to sit down with Pete earlier today to talk about our shared priorities on how to best reform the Department of Defense and ensure that our military is laser focused on recruitment, preparedness, and lethality."

Highlighting his ongoing efforts since assuming office, Schmitt expressed his commitment to removing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies from the military. He mentioned several measures already undertaken: "Since I was sworn in as Senator, one of my top priorities has been removing divisive DEI policies from our nation’s military, and I’m proud of the items we’ve been able to tackle so far." These actions include a permanent hiring freeze on DEI positions within the military and other related changes.

Additionally, Senator Schmitt launched an audit similar to those conducted during Truman's presidency to evaluate the Department of Defense's workforce. Looking ahead, he expressed eagerness to collaborate with Hegseth in further eliminating DEI elements from the military structure. His goals also include streamlining procurement processes and preparing for international challenges: "I look forward to working with Pete...and ensure that we’re prepared to take on the rise of China, our greatest adversary."
