Missouri State University's men's soccer team defeated Drake University 1-0 on Tuesday night, marking the Bulldogs' first loss of the season. The match was held at Missouri State's home stadium in front of a large crowd.
Senior Daniele Verdirosi scored the only goal in the 24th minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Drake's goalkeeper Tomas Butkovic failed to secure the ball. "It felt amazing to score as we have had some tough losses this season, so we needed to win again for our confidence. I'm very happy for me and especially for the win with my teammates," stated Verdirosi after the game.
Throughout the match, Missouri State (now 5-5-2) maintained pressure and limited Drake’s offensive chances. Freshman Harry Hogben took an early shot in the fifth minute, while senior goalkeeper Jonathan Kliewer made two saves and secured a clean sheet.
A red card was issued to Drake's Ryder Barret just before Verdirosi's goal, giving Missouri State an advantage. The Bears continued their attacking play into the second half with further attempts from Verdirosi and Fumiya Shiraishi, but both were saved by Butkovic. In total, Missouri State outshot Drake 8-6 and had four shots on target compared to none from corner kicks for their opponent.
Drake attempted to equalize late in the match when Preston Kipnusu shot toward goal but was stopped by Kliewer.
Head Coach Michael Seabolt praised his team’s effort: "Drake is another great team we have faced this season, and that's two straight teams that we have beaten that were undefeated. We did a great job once on the road against South Florida and tonight again at home. I'm really proud of the boys. It was a great job by Kliewer getting a clean sheet in goal and Hugo Jinkinson had his first start tonight in the regular season, so I am super proud of him. A lot of guys stepped up tonight, and I am just excited for next week."
Missouri State will host Memphis next at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium on Saturday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m., with free admission offered for all home games throughout the season.
