Missouri State University's women's tennis team began its fall season with a 6-1 win against Drury University at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. The match took place on Saturday afternoon and marked the Bears' first victory of the season.
During doubles play, both teams were evenly matched. Senior Raluca Puscas and freshman Matilde Ercoli secured the first doubles win for Missouri State at the No. 2 position, defeating Drury's Antanina Novik and Ina Bechle 6-4. The No. 3 doubles team, comprised of freshmen Leni Eichner and Elsie Jackson, clinched the point for Missouri State with a close 7-6 victory over Franca Piaggi and Ana Luisa Sathler Rosa from Drury. Eichner and Jackson overcame a 4-0 deficit in the tie-break to win nine points to seven.
In singles matches, Missouri State maintained control. Eichner won her match at No. 3 singles against Eliana Weichel with scores of 6-3, 6-0. Jackson followed with a win at No. 5 singles over Bechle, finishing 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore Lucy Latham earned a victory at No.1 singles by defeating Leana Chanove in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. At No.2 singles, Puscas came back in the second set to defeat Novik with scores of 6-3, 7-5.
Ercoli added another win for Missouri State at No.4 singles by beating Piaggi, finishing her match with scores of 6-0, 7-5.
The only loss for Missouri State came at No.6 singles where Ana Luisa Sathler Rosa from Drury defeated Lola Federski in two sets.
Missouri State will next host the MoState Invitational starting October 3 at Cooper Tennis Complex.
