Missouri State University Lady Bears soccer team achieved their first Conference USA win on Thursday night, defeating Jacksonville State 1-0 at the Jax State Soccer Complex. The decisive goal came in the 50th minute when Emma Shields scored her second goal of the season with a right-footed shot into the top left corner, assisted by Julia Kristensen.
The match was closely contested in the first half, with both teams displaying strong defensive play. In the second half, Missouri State increased its offensive pressure and broke through Jacksonville State’s defense. The Bears’ defenders Kayla Smith and Maddie Schneiderhahn were instrumental in holding off Jacksonville State’s attack, allowing only four shots on goal from their opponents. Missouri State also led in corner kicks with a 9-2 advantage.
Reilly Heman led Missouri State's offense with three shot attempts, while Shields and Elena Bartak each had shots on target. Goalkeeper Ella Becker recorded her fourth shutout of the season as Missouri State secured its second consecutive clean sheet.
The victory extends Missouri State’s unbeaten streak in conference matches to 22 games, dating back to October 2022.
"This is a moment everyone in the program will cherish and remember for a long time," head coach Kirk Nelson said. "Getting our first win in the new conference, along with a shutout and our first goal, is a huge testament to the hard work this team has put in all year. We are looking forward to our next challenge on Sunday. Go Bears!"
Missouri State now holds a record of 4-5-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Conference USA play. The team will face Kennesaw State on Sunday before beginning a four-game home stand.
