Missouri State University's women's soccer team secured a 3-0 win over Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) on Thursday in Cape Girardeau. The victory marks the Bears' second consecutive road win this season.
The opening goal came in the 30th minute when Reilly Heman set up freshman Emma Shields, who scored into the bottom left corner to give Missouri State a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Early in the second half, Julia Kristensen advanced from midfield and delivered a cross that found Heman, who finished to double the lead. Less than a minute later, Brooke Cattoor capitalized on a rebound after SEMO blocked an initial shot, scoring the team's third goal.
Defensively, Kendall Petoskey, Maddie Schneiderhahn, Riley Smith, and Kayla Smith anchored the back line. Goalkeeper Ella Becker recorded her first shutout of the season and her second career clean sheet as Missouri State kept SEMO scoreless for the match.
"The team was on a mission tonight to get a shutout and they completed the task with a full team defensive effort," said head coach Kirk Nelson. "At half we made some adjustments in our strategy and were able to execute it and put away two quick goals to get us to the 3-0 mark. Winning back to back games on the road is a large accomplishment. Very excited to be back at home this Sunday in a key in-state matchup."
Missouri State now holds a record of 2-2-1 for the season. The team will return home for its next game against Missouri on Sunday, August 31 at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium. Admission is free for all home games throughout the season.
