Citizens Memorial Hospital (CMH) has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain-MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2025. The hospital is one of only 323 facilities across the United States, and one of 11 in Missouri, to be recognized with this award. In southwest Missouri, only CMH and Cox Medical Center in Branson earned this distinction.

The award acknowledges CMH’s adherence to nationally recognized treatment guidelines for heart attack care set by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

“This award reflects the outstanding care patients receive at CMH," said Michael Calhoun, CEO and executive director of CMH and the CMH Foundation. “Our heart attack patients receive the same exceptional treatment as those in bigger hospitals. This consistency helps patients in our rural communities get safe, high-quality care close to home.”

CMH achieved this recognition by maintaining strong performance in the Chest Pain-MI Registry during both 2023 and 2024. The hospital excelled in several key performance measures by using a data-driven approach aimed at improving guideline adherence and overall quality of care.

“This award indicates that CMH remains committed to providing top-quality, guideline-driven care for heart attack patients,” said Michael C. Kontos, M.D., FACC, chair of the NCDR Chest Pain-MI Registry Steering Subcommittee and cardiologist at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. “Their success ensures patients are receiving the highest quality cardiovascular care.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than 800,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot blocks blood flow through a coronary artery to part of the heart muscle.

Standard treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and at discharge, quickly restoring blood flow to blocked arteries, offering counseling on quitting smoking, and referring patients to cardiac rehabilitation programs.

The Chest Pain-MI Registry is designed to help health care teams follow up-to-date science-based guidelines for treating heart attack patients. It serves as a national benchmark for improving quality and safety in caring for individuals with coronary artery disease.
