The CMH Senior Fitness Center has installed a new dehumidifier in its pool room, made possible by a $20,000 grant from the Polk County Senior Citizens Services Fund. The total expense for the equipment reached $37,000.

The facility includes a small fitness pool and hot tub to support exercise programs that minimize joint pain for seniors. According to Jody Pool, coordinator at the center, “Water walking is the most common water exercise for our members. The resistance really works on muscles and cardio, but it’s buoyant so it doesn’t hurt the joints.”

The new dehumidifier is expected to lower humidity levels in the pool area. This improvement helps extend the lifespan of mechanical systems and metal fixtures such as windows, door handles, and hinges by reducing moisture damage.

“We’re grateful for the funding to replace this equipment,” Pool said. "The dehumidifier makes the pool much more comfortable. In the summer, it’s like a sauna without it.”

Seniors aged 55 and older can use the CMH Senior Fitness Center at no cost. The center serves several counties in Missouri: Polk, Greene, Dallas, Dade, Hickory, Cedar and St. Clair. Offerings include access to exercise machines and group classes.

Pool also highlighted another benefit of attending: “Seniors come here for exercise, but they also really enjoy the social aspect. Many great friendships have formed at our center during the 21 years we’ve been open.”

Residents interested in free membership or more information are encouraged to call 417-777-7171 or visit the CMH Senior Fitness Center online.

The facility is owned and operated by Citizens Memorial Health Care Foundation in Bolivar.
