This weekend, a bipartisan effort led by Senator Eric Schmitt and Senator Jon Ossoff culminated in the signing of the Think Differently Database Act into law by the President. The legislation aims to provide better organization and accessibility to resources for individuals with disabilities.
"The Think Differently Database Act creates a comprehensive website that provides organization to much-needed resources that benefit those with disabilities. I first entered public service because of my son Stephen, and fighting for individuals with disabilities has always been a top priority for me. I’m extremely proud that this critical piece of legislation was signed into law, but my efforts to improve the lives of those with disabilities will continue," said Senator Eric Schmitt.
Senator Ossoff highlighted the bipartisan nature of the effort, stating, "Working alongside Senator Schmitt, we brought Republicans and Democrats together to help Georgia families and families nationwide identify and access resources for people with disabilities."
The new law mandates the Secretary of Health & Human Services to develop an accessible website. This platform will include federal and state resources for individuals with intellectual disabilities. It also aims to connect individuals, families, and caregivers with healthcare, mental health services, and other community-based programs within state Medicaid offerings. A zip code feature is intended to assist users in finding local resources.
This act is notable as it represents the second stand-alone legislative achievement introduced by Senator Schmitt during his tenure that has become law. His focus on disability rights includes previous initiatives like the ENABLE Act, which recently passed the Senate.
