Springfield City Council has unanimously approved a measure to enter exclusive negotiations with the United Soccer League (USL) regarding the potential establishment of professional men's and women's soccer teams in Springfield. This decision includes signing a letter of intent with the USL, marking a step forward in exploring this opportunity.

The formal announcement will be made on December 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the proposed stadium site in Jordan Valley Commons. The city will evaluate the feasibility of supporting these teams while enhancing entertainment options within Springfield's sports district. The council has agreed to share research costs with the USL, considering factors such as funding and constructing a new stadium east of Hammons Field.

Justin Papadakis, USL Deputy Chief Executive Officer, expressed enthusiasm about bringing soccer to Springfield, citing its rich soccer culture and passionate fan base. "We are committed to working closely with the City of Springfield to explore how we can contribute to the community’s vibrant future through professional soccer," he said.

Amanda Ohlensehlen, Director of Economic Vitality and Workforce Development, mentioned that discussions include potential collaboration on real estate development for a multi-purpose sports and entertainment district in Springfield. "We believe this partnership could elevate Springfield’s sports landscape, provide new entertainment options, and drive significant economic and community benefits," she stated.

Springfield's soccer community has grown significantly over recent years. Notable achievements include Missouri State University's men's soccer team success in NCAA Division I, Springfield Demize's advancement in league play, Sporting Springfield Club's youth development successes, and Southwest MO Rush's focus on youth player development.

Investments have been made into local soccer facilities to enhance their quality and capacity for hosting tournaments. These developments include renovations at Cooper Park and Lake Country Soccer, as well as support from Betty and Bobby Allison Sports Town for regional growth in soccer activities.

The initial reading for considering the letter of intent took place on December 3rd. A public hearing followed by a vote was held during the City Council meeting on December 16th.

The USL is known for its extensive network impacting over 200 communities across the United States since its founding in 1986. It provides comprehensive pathways from youth to professional levels for both men and women under one ecosystem.
