The City of Springfield is organizing a public information session on October 21 to discuss the upcoming construction of phase I of the Renew Jordan Creek daylighting project. The event will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Jay Wasson Idea Loft inside the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center, located at 405 N. Jefferson Ave.

The session will start with an open house at 4:30 p.m., followed by a staff presentation at 5:15 p.m. Attendees will learn about the project's details and what to expect as major construction begins this fall. The project team will provide an estimated timeline for construction and discuss anticipated traffic impacts. There will also be opportunities for attendees to speak with project team members and ask questions.

Renew Jordan Creek aims to restore the historic Jordan Creek in downtown Springfield, covering two large blocks in Jordan Valley Park, bordered by Boonville Avenue, Water Street, Main Avenue, and Mill Street. The project's goals include flood reduction, water quality improvements, pedestrian connectivity enhancements, sustainable greenspaces integration, comfort and safety improvements, and sense of place development.

Funding for phase I comes from local sources like the City’s Level Property Tax and various grants such as Surface Transportation Block Grants and Department of Natural Resources ARPA funds.

Contractor bids were solicited late this summer for phase I construction. With approval pending for qualified bids and necessary permits, construction is expected to begin in late fall. It is scheduled to last approximately two years with completion anticipated in late 2026.

Throughout construction, local traffic access will be maintained but may require direction changes near work zones for certain periods. The city is reaching out to businesses that might be directly impacted by the project.

Business or property owners wishing to schedule a meeting with the city can contact Project Manager Kirkland Preston via email or phone provided in the announcement.
