Clean Green Springfield's city-wide cleanup initiative is gearing up to address the issue of difficult-to-dispose items in Springfield. According to the initiative, items like household bulky items, tires, and mattresses often end up improperly dumped in various locations around the city. In an effort to combat this problem, Clean Green Springfield will be hosting two “Drop-off Depot” disposal events on April 20 and May 4 at 404 N. Jefferson Avenue in downtown Springfield.

During these events, residents can dispose of a variety of items at no cost. The City will accept general household trash, bulky items, mattresses, and tires. However, certain items such as yard waste, hazardous materials, TVs, computers, and appliances with refrigerants will not be accepted. Additionally, a limit of 4 mattresses and box springs per residential household, as well as 8 tires per household, will be enforced.

Mattresses, in particular, are highlighted as problematic for the Springfield Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill due to their space-consuming nature. Therefore, the initiative encourages residents to recycle mattresses to keep them out of the landfill.

The article also mentions the importance of recycling tires to prevent harmful chemicals from polluting the environment. Residents are reminded to detach tires from metal and rims before dropping them off at the event.

In addition to the “Drop-off Depot” events, Clean Green Springfield is offering volunteer opportunities for those interested in participating in litter cleanup and beautification efforts. More than 650 volunteers have already registered, with various cleanup events scheduled, including roadside trash pickups, stream cleanups, and neighborhood cleanup dropoff events.

A recent cleanup event on April 7 saw around 120 volunteers from Drury University Greek Life and Kraft collecting over 50 bags of litter from Kansas Expressway Point of Pride. Individuals, families, businesses, and service organizations are encouraged to register for volunteer opportunities and contribute to the initiative.
