The City of Springfield has extended the deadline for contractor bids for the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge rehabilitation project. Project Manager Nicholas Edelman stated, “So far in the solicitation, we have received a lot of interest from contractors and a lot of really good questions.” The extension aims to provide more information and time for interested contracting companies to submit qualified bids.
The Jefferson Avenue Footbridge, a 562-foot-long steel bridge built in 1902, holds significant historic and engineering value. It was the first of its kind in Missouri, constructed by The American Bridge Company of Pennsylvania with an innovative multi-arched cantilever design. This design allowed workers to build the bridge over the railroad tracks, minimizing impacts below. The footbridge symbolizes the unity of North and South Springfield, highlighting the community's connection to the railroad and commercial growth opportunities.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003, the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge has been a vital pedestrian and bicycle link between districts in Springfield. It served as a catalyst for growth in the surrounding areas before its closure. More details about the rehabilitation effort and how to participate in the bid process can be found on the city's website at springfieldmo.gov/footbridge.
