As a part of ongoing efforts to promote news literacy and critical thinking, the University of Central Missouri's James C. Kirkpatrick Library will present a hybrid panel discussion on “The Changing Face of News,” 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, at the library’s active learning room, 1260. The panel is composed of three award-winning journalists.
Panel member Jaimi Dowdell is an investigative reporter and data journalist for Reuters, based in Los Angeles. In 2021, she won the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for her work analyzing qualified immunity for police officers who use excessive force.
David Bodden is the news director for KQ2 ABC News in St. Joseph. He is an Emmy award winner and has earned multiple Associated Press awards. Bodden has covered stories ranging from the capture of the Atlanta Centennial Olympic Park bomber to the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub.
A UCM alumna, Nicole Cooke is the editor of both the Warrensburg Star-Journal and the Sedalia Democrat. Named one of Editor & Publisher magazine’s “25 Under 35,” she is noted as being a “community-minded” journalist, working to cultivate relationships in the Warrensburg and Sedalia areas to promote trust and the importance of local reporting.
With the theme of “The Changing Face of News,” the three journalists will speak to evolving forms of journalism and their impact on news consumption. The panel will be moderated by Muleskinner Editor-in-Chief, Rachel Becker, and introduced by Muleskinner Faculty Adviser Dr. Julie Lewis. University Librarian, Dr. Janette Klein, will also speak to the importance of academic libraries on the topic, highlighting UCM’s library initiatives to support news literacy and source investigation.
Light refreshments will be served and in-person attendance is strongly encouraged.
