Missouri State University’s women’s soccer team secured a 1-1 draw against Nebraska on Sunday in Lincoln, continuing their road campaign. The match was marked by physical play and strong defensive efforts from both teams.
“Earning a point on the road against a very strong Nebraska side was an extremely tough test for our team,” said head coach Kirk Nelson. “We battled for the full 90 minutes, matched their physicality, and created multiple quality chances.”
The first half featured several challenges between the teams, with referees allowing play to continue despite aggressive tactics. Missouri State managed to maintain its formation and kept up offensive pressure. Macee McKenna earned a penalty during the half, but Nebraska’s goalkeeper stopped the attempt, keeping the score level at halftime.
Defensively, Riley Smith made a significant sliding tackle inside the box to stop a Nebraska attack. Goalkeeper Ella Becker contributed two saves before halftime to maintain the tie.
After halftime, Missouri State broke through in the 55th minute when McKenna delivered a pass over Nebraska’s back line to Rowann Law. Law scored her first collegiate goal with a left-footed shot into the bottom-right corner.
Nebraska responded six minutes later with an equalizer from outside the box. For the remainder of the match, Missouri State relied on organized defending and further saves from Becker—who finished with eight total—to hold off late attacks and secure a draw.
“Our team defending and goalkeeping were outstanding and kept us in a great position all game,” Nelson added. “I’m excited to get back home and play in front of our fans this Thursday!”
Missouri State will return home for its season opener at Allison South Stadium against Kansas City on Thursday, August 21 at 4:00 p.m. Central Time. Admission is free for all regular-season games at Allison South Stadium.
