Missouri State University’s women’s soccer team began its 2025 season with a 5-2 loss to the Kansas Jayhawks at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence. The Bears struggled in the first half, conceding three goals before halftime against their Big 12 opponent.

Head coach Kirk Nelson commented on the match, saying, "This was a tough road test against a high-quality opponent. We gave up a few goals in the first half, made some adjustments at the break, and came out swinging in the second half."

Kansas scored twice within the opening 20 minutes and added another goal before halftime. Missouri State goalkeeper Ella Becker made four saves during this period as Kansas maintained early offensive pressure.

Defender Kayla Smith played a key role for Missouri State by helping to slow down Kansas’ attack through her positioning and defensive efforts.

The Bears showed improvement after halftime. In the 54th minute, Riley Smith assisted Maggie O'Keefe for Missouri State's first goal of the night with a right-footed shot into the top corner.

Later in the match, Abby Hansen scored following a rebound from Reilly Heman’s effort, reducing Kansas’ lead but not enough to change the outcome. The final score stood at 5-2.

Nelson said after the game, "The standards for our team are high. Even though we didn't win, this was a massive growth moment for us as we head into another tough road match on Sunday. I'm proud of this team!"

Missouri State will next play Nebraska on Sunday in Lincoln at Hibner Stadium. Nebraska won its opener against Southern Indiana with a 6-0 result.
