Senator Eric Schmitt | U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt
Senator Schmitt recently appeared on Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria" to discuss President Trump's legislative proposal, referred to as the Big Beautiful Bill. During the interview, Schmitt addressed several key issues, including government spending reforms and budget balancing.
Discussing government spending, Senator Schmitt expressed concern about recent increases in expenditure. He stated, "I will tell you, one of the things a big number of Senators are concerned about are spending reforms. We went from spending $4 trillion to over $7 trillion, we take in $5 trillion now." Schmitt emphasized that this period might be unique for addressing fiscal discipline due to the Senate's current voting requirements: "This may be the only time…the only time we can really address this because we only need 51 votes in the Senate."
On balancing the budget, Senator Schmitt suggested returning to pre-pandemic spending levels while accounting for population growth and inflation could lead to a balanced budget within a few years. He noted, "It’s irresponsible for us to continue to spend $2 trillion every year we don’t have," and pointed out that interest on debt exceeds military expenditure.
Schmitt also criticized what he termed as obstructionist behavior from Democrats. He described an NGO network allegedly involved in protests and accused Democrats of lacking leadership: "The Democrats have no message. I don’t think they’ve hit rock bottom yet…They’re total obstructionists at this point."
Lastly, Senator Schmitt praised President Trump’s efforts in securing the southern border without new legislation: “We just needed a President to enforce the laws that we have...President Trump has essentially sealed that border.”
