Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri has expressed his condolences following the passing of Pope Francis. In a statement released today, Schmitt, who is noted for being the first Catholic Republican in the U.S. Senate from Missouri, shared his sorrow over the loss.

"Pope Francis was a dedicated servant of God and was devout in his efforts to spread the good news of Jesus' great works while showing great compassion for those in need. As a Catholic, I am sad to hear of his passing this morning," Schmitt stated.

The senator also invited others to join him and his family in praying for Pope Francis, the global Catholic community, and those mourning the pontiff's death.
