Senator Eric Schmitt of the Senate Armed Services Committee has affirmed his support for Pete Hegseth, who has been confirmed as the new Secretary of Defense. Schmitt expressed his approval following his vote in favor, emphasizing Hegseth's leadership qualities and commitment to America's safety.
Schmitt stated, "I was proud to vote for Pete Hegseth to be our Secretary of Defense. Pete is a bold leader committed to prioritizing America’s safety and strength, and I know he will do an outstanding job leading the Department of Defense." He further criticized Washington bureaucrats, accusing them of being "detached from the day-to-day realities of military service," a situation he claims has hindered innovation and weakened national security.
Highlighting Hegseth’s military experience, Schmitt remarked, "With the experience of having served in combat, Pete understands the harsh realities of war and he will put our country’s core national interests at the forefront of his agenda."
Schmitt also expressed anticipation for collaborating with Hegseth on specific reforms, stating, "I look forward to working with Pete to eliminate DEI from our nation’s military, streamline broken procurement processes, and ensure that we’re prepared to take on the rise of China, our greatest adversary."
