Washington, Mar 14 2024 - Today, Senators Eric Schmitt and Tammy Duckworth, along with Representatives French Hill and Yadira Caraveo, introduced the bipartisan, bicameral Taiwan and America Space Assistance Act of 2024, aimed at enhancing cooperation between the United States and Taiwan in the realm of space exploration and satellite operations.

Senator Eric Schmitt emphasized the importance of the TASA Act in strengthening national security and expanding alliances, stating, "U.S. cooperation with Taiwan in the space domain affords the U.S. the ability to gain key insight into space functions in the region while also further expanding our lines of communication with an important ally."

Senator Tammy Duckworth highlighted the necessity of collaboration in advancing technology for space exploration, stating, "With the constant expansion of new, innovative technology for space exploration and satellite operations and the United States’ leadership in this sector, it’s as crucial as ever that we work with our partners in the Indo-Pacific to advance and prosper."

Representative French Hill underlined the significance of the bill in allowing NASA and NOAA to work with Taiwan on civilian space activities, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating American and Taiwanese cooperation to counter the influence of China.

Representative Yadira Caraveo echoed the sentiment of bilateral cooperation, stating, "Both the U.S. and Taiwan stand to gain key insights by working together in the realm of space exploration, cooperating on weather programs, and collaborating to develop the next generation of satellite technology."

The TASA Act aims to bridge current gaps in cooperation between the U.S. and Taiwan in the space domain, particularly due to the restrictions under the "One China Policy." The Act would not only authorize NASA to collaborate with the Taiwan Space Agency but also facilitate joint efforts in satellite programs, space exploration, and atmospheric and weather programs.

Taiwan's commitment to space exploration is evident through the establishment of the Taiwan Space Agency (TASA) in 2022, with significant investments to boost the nation's commercial space capabilities. The TASA Act is poised to create a crucial partnership for the U.S. and NASA in the Indo-Pacific, enabling Taiwan to leverage NASA's expertise to enhance its space capabilities.

In conclusion, the Taiwan and America Space Assistance Act of 2024 sets the stage for enhanced collaboration between the U.S. and Taiwan in the space domain, signaling a commitment to advancing national security through international partnerships and technological advancements.
