Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer, former Rep. Wes Rogers, Rep. Rudy Veit, and Sen. Barbara Ann Washington received the 2022 Legislative Awards for their significant contributions to legislation affecting the administration of justice and the integrity of the judiciary.
Lauren Tucker McCubbin, 2022-23 Missouri Bar president, said the lawyer-legislators have each filled key leadership and legislative roles in their respective chambers during their time in the General Assembly, ensuring Missouri’s justice system has necessary funding and resources.
Luetkemeyer is a Republican state senator representing District 34 (Buchanan and Platte counties). He also serves as chair of the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Law, Luetkemeyer practices law in Kansas City.
“As chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Luetkemeyer has been at the forefront of a number of legislative issues directly impacting Missouri courts and the legal profession,” Tucker McCubbin said. “As a lawyer-legislator, his public service and work on behalf of the public is greatly appreciated.”
Rogers is the former Democratic state representative of District 18 (Clay County). A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Law, he is small business owner and lawyer, previously serving as Clay County’s deputy chief prosecuting attorney. Rogers did not seek re-election in 2022.
“By bringing a lawyer’s perspective to committee discussion and floor debate, Rep. Rogers made many meaningful contributions to the lawmaking process,” Tucker McCubbin said. “He has also contributed to the improvement of the profession, particularly with his efforts to recognize and acknowledge the hard work of lawyers serving as legislative staff.”
Veit serves as a Republican state representative for District 59 (Cole County) and is vice chair of the House Judiciary Committee. A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Law, Veit is a lawyer at Carson & Coil Law Firm in Jefferson City.
“As vice chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Veit has played a key role in advancing Missouri Bar-initiated legislation through the General Assembly,” Tucker McCubbin said. “At many points in the legislative process, he has consistently applied his knowledge of the law and his legal experience to improve legislation under consideration.”
Washington is a Democratic state senator representing District 9 (part of Jackson County) and a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. A graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Washington practices law in Kansas City.
“As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Sen. Washington has utilized her experience as a lawyer to ensure that the justice system is properly funded and resources are dedicated where they can make the greatest difference in the lives of Missourians,” Lauren Tucker McCubbin said.
