Representatives Eric Burlison and Lauren Boebert have introduced the "Abolish the ATF Act" in an effort to protect Second Amendment rights. The proposed legislation aims to eliminate the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), which Burlison describes as a symbol of bureaucratic overreach infringing on constitutional liberties.
"The ATF is emblematic of the deep-state bureaucracy that believes it can infringe on constitutional liberties without consequence," stated Rep. Burlison. He further asserted that if the agency cannot operate within constitutional boundaries, it should not exist.
Congresswoman Boebert echoed these sentiments, stating, "I cannot imagine under any circumstance or administration where the ATF serves as an ally to the Second Amendment and law-abiding firearm owners across America." As co-chair of the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus, she expressed eagerness to work with Burlison on this initiative.
The history of the ATF is criticized for its alleged overreach and controversial actions, including rulings on pistol braces and compliance demands affecting gun store owners. The agency's past incidents such as Waco, Ruby Ridge, and Operation Fast and Furious are cited as examples of its failures.
In addition to this act, Rep. Burlison plans to introduce legislation aimed at repealing the 1934 National Firearms Act. This act currently imposes taxes and restrictions on gun owners. Burlison's legislative history in Missouri includes support for measures like Stand Your Ground laws and Constitutional Carry.
The bill has several cosponsors: Representatives Lauren Boebert, Andy Biggs, Mike Collins, Bob Onder, Andy Ogles, Mary Miller, Keith Self, and Paul Gosar.
