The Springfield City Council has approved a measure to sign a letter of intent with the United Soccer League (USL). This agreement marks the beginning of exclusive negotiations to explore the possibility of establishing professional men's and women's soccer teams in Springfield. A formal announcement is scheduled for 2 p.m. on December 17 at the proposed stadium site at Jordan Valley Commons.
During this negotiation phase, the city will assess its capacity to support professional soccer teams and investigate opportunities to enhance its sports district downtown. The city council has agreed to share the costs of feasibility research with USL, which will consider factors such as potential funding and constructing a new soccer stadium east of Hammons Field.
"We are incredibly excited about the potential opportunity to bring both USL men’s and women’s teams to Springfield," said Justin Papadakis, USL Deputy Chief Executive Officer. "The City has a rich soccer culture and a passionate community of sports fans that aligns with the USL’s vision of growing the sport at all levels."
Amanda Ohlensehlen, Director of Economic Vitality and Workforce Development, stated that discussions would include potential collaboration on a real estate development project aimed at creating a multi-purpose sports and entertainment district in Springfield. "We believe this partnership could elevate Springfield’s sports landscape, provide new entertainment options, and drive significant economic and community benefits," she said.
Springfield's soccer community has grown significantly over recent years, achieving competitive success across various levels:
1. Missouri State University (MSU) men's soccer team has excelled in NCAA Division I competitions since 2019, making six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
2. The MSU women's team recently made history by winning both regular season and conference tournament championships.
3. The Springfield Demize indoor team won the Midwest Division crown in MASL 3 in 2022.
4. Sporting Springfield Club continues its youth development programs as an affiliate of Sporting Kansas City.
5. Southwest MO Rush focuses on developing youth players through international programs.
Recent investments have been made in local facilities like Cooper Park and Lake Country Soccer Improvements, which are undergoing renovations expected to complete by 2025. Betty and Bobby Allison Sports Town also supports regional growth through various programs.
The first reading regarding this measure will occur on December 3rd, followed by a public hearing during the City Council meeting on December 16th where a vote is anticipated.
