Springfield police investigate fifth homicide case of 2026

Springfield police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on the evening of February 27, 2026. Officers responded to a report of gunfire near South Avenue and Walnut Street at 8:01 p.m.

Upon arrival, police found Anthony Chambers, a 48-year-old from North Carolina, who had been shot. Chambers was transported to the hospital but later died. His family has been notified.

Caden Burks, a 22-year-old resident of Springfield, was identified as the suspect and taken into custody. He is currently being held at the Greene County Jail.

The case will be submitted to the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office for review and possible criminal charges.
