Springfield police investigate fatal shooting on S. Kimbrough Avenue

Springfield police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred late Thursday night near the intersection of Kimbrough Avenue and Elm Street. Officers responded to the scene at 11:51 p.m. on January 15, 2026.

Upon arrival, officers found Brandon Watt, 22, of Springfield, who had suffered gunshot wounds. Watt was transported to a hospital where he later died. Authorities have notified his family.

Police identified Dawson Smith, 20, also of Springfield, as the suspect in the case. Smith was arrested at the scene. The case will be submitted to the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office for review and consideration of charges.

Detectives are continuing their investigation and encourage anyone with information related to this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).

“This is Springfield’s 2nd homicide investigation in 2026,” according to authorities.
