Senator Eric Schmitt intends to propose legislation aimed at increasing penalties for crimes against first responders. This decision follows the recent death of a Kansas City paramedic, Graham Hoffman, who was killed by a known criminal released from custody shortly before the incident.

In his statement, Senator Schmitt expressed his determination to prevent such tragedies from occurring again in Missouri and across the nation. He stated, “Over the weekend the life of Kansas City firefighter-paramedic, Graham Hoffman, was cut short at the hands of a known criminal who was released from custody shortly before this attack occurred. A tragedy such as this must never be allowed to happen again in Missouri or across the nation.”

Schmitt emphasized the role of first responders in maintaining community safety and highlighted the importance of protecting them from harm. “First responders put their lives on the line each and every day to keep our communities safe, its time we stand up to ensure they are protected from those who wish to do them harm,” he said.

The proposed legislation will honor Graham Hoffman and aims to increase federal penalties for those who murder first responders while they are performing their duties. Schmitt’s initiative seeks to ensure that first responders receive additional protections from potential threats.

“This legislation, in honor of Graham, will help ensure our nation does just that,” he concluded.
