Today in Washington, Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri urged the confirmation of Brian Burch as U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See. This call came after the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pope in Catholic Church history. Schmitt emphasized the opportunity to enhance relations with the Vatican under Pope Leo XIV’s administration.
Senator Schmitt, who is noted as the first Catholic Republican elected to the Senate from Missouri, sought unanimous consent for Burch’s confirmation. However, Senate Democrats blocked this effort.
Schmitt stated, “With the election of Pope Leo XIV last week, the first American born pope in the history of the Catholic Church, we have a unique opportunity to help develop relationships with the Vatican like never before.” He expressed disappointment over the blocking of Burch’s nomination, saying it hinders strengthening ties between the United States and the Vatican.
The Senator delivered brief remarks on Burch’s nomination on the Senate floor and followed up with a rebuttal after Democrats opposed his move.
