Missouri State University’s women’s soccer team secured its first win of the season with a 4-2 result against SIUE in Edwardsville, Illinois, on Sunday. The Bears took control early in the match, led by Abby Hansen’s contributions to three of the team’s four goals.

The opening goal came less than two minutes into play when Hansen assisted Julia Kristensen. Missouri State continued to press, adding a second goal in the 15th minute from Reilly Heman after a sequence initiated by Hansen and Jane Hansen. Abby Hansen then scored herself in the 18th minute with a shot from outside the box.

Despite an own goal that allowed SIUE to get on the scoreboard, Missouri State responded quickly as Brooke Cattoor converted a penalty in the 38th minute. The Bears entered halftime with a 4-1 lead.

In the second half, SIUE managed to score again in the 68th minute and later earned a penalty opportunity. Goalkeeper Victoria Spahn made two saves to maintain Missouri State’s advantage.

Head coach Kirk Nelson commented on his team’s performance: “Very pleased with how fast and intense our team came out today to put in a few goals early. A key for us moving forward is maintaining that energy and keeping the shutout. But excited for the win and getting three points on the road.”

Missouri State now holds a record of 1-2-1 this season and will conclude their current road trip against SEMO on Thursday, August 28.
