During Mental Health Awareness Month in May, the focus is on recognizing the uniqueness of each person’s mental health experience and the importance of being informed and proactive in one’s own care. Gregory Forrester, MNSc, PMHNP-BC from OCH shared insights on navigating mental health with confidence.

Forrester noted that mental health can change due to various factors such as seasonal shifts, life circumstances, or challenging events. “A lot of people suffer from seasonal depression, especially during the winter,” he explained. “Situational stressors, like relationships, finances, the political climate, or your physical health can all play a role. These factors change, and so does our mental state.”

Acknowledging these changes as part of the mental health journey encourages patience and reaching out for support when needed.

Mental health diagnosis and treatment rely heavily on personal experiences and self-reported symptoms since there are no lab tests for it. “Mental health is very subjective,” said Forrester. “There is no diagnostic test—it all comes down to an accurate history and how a person presents. Patients are truly the best advocates for themselves.”

Honesty about one’s feelings is crucial in treatment decisions, particularly with medication. Forrester pointed out that sexual dysfunction and weight gain are common reasons people stop taking antidepressants. He emphasized the importance of discussing these issues with providers rather than making uninformed changes.

Forrester advised keeping track of symptoms or side effects in a journal as this can be beneficial in understanding one’s mental health patterns. This practice is particularly helpful during life transitions that affect mental wellness.

In conclusion, each person’s mental health journey is unique, highlighting the importance of individual voices and experiences. During Mental Health Awareness Month, staying curious, honest, and connected is encouraged.
