U.S. Representative Eric Burlison of Missouri has joined other House Republicans in advocating for the complete repeal of the Inflation Reduction Act’s green energy subsidies. In a letter addressed to Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, these lawmakers expressed concerns that retaining any subsidy would compromise conservative energy values and hinder America’s path to energy dominance.
“Republicans were elected on a promise to dismantle Biden’s Green New Scam,” said Rep. Burlison. “These subsidies are distorting the energy market, driving up costs, and threatening our grid. We must follow through—no half-measures, repeal it all.”
The letter argues that the nearly $1 trillion in subsidies provided by the IRA for solar, wind, electric vehicles, hydrogen, and other sectors not only impose fiscal burdens but also weaken national security and destabilize the energy grid.
The letter further claims that these subsidies undermine President Trump’s efforts to restore American energy dominance. It criticizes how these financial supports displace traditional energy sources like coal and natural gas while allegedly inflating costs for taxpayers.
Highlighting their campaign promises from 2024, Republicans emphasized their commitment to ending what they describe as a “Socialist Green New Deal.” They argue that maintaining any part of these subsidies contradicts their free-market principles.
The document warns against repeating Europe’s reliance on renewable energies, which it says leaves them vulnerable to foreign oil dependency. The lawmakers express concern over China selling solar panels and electric vehicle components while expanding its own coal capacity.
Proponents of repealing the IRA argue this action will save taxpayers up to $1 trillion over ten years according to estimates from organizations such as Goldman Sachs and the Congressional Budget Office. They assert that removing these subsidies could ease inflationary pressures, lower interest rates, enhance economic growth, and restore affordability in energy prices.
The representatives stress that this is an opportune moment for an IRA repeal within the upcoming reconciliation process in Congress. They urge colleagues not to settle for partial measures but rather pursue a full repeal of the act’s provisions related to green energy.
