The City of Springfield will be hosting the second Clean Green “Drop-off Depot” disposal event this Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 404 N. Jefferson Avenue in downtown Springfield. According to the announcement, residents can dispose of tires, mattresses, general trash, and bulky items at no cost during the event.
As stated by the press release, "The event will remain open under rainy conditions. However, for the safety of event staff, collection operations may pause or close early in the event of a thunderstorm." It is advised to monitor the City’s social media channels for any event notifications.
The disposal event will not offer a home pickup option, and commercial waste, construction and demolition waste, as well as trailers, will not be accepted. The City will be accepting general household trash, furniture, and bulky items, but items such as yard waste, hazardous waste, major appliances, and items containing chemicals, fuel, or refrigerants will not be accepted.
Regarding mattresses, the announcement specifies that mattresses and box springs will be accepted, with a limit of 4 pieces per residential household. The items must be clean, dry, and free of infestation. In case of rain, residents are advised to cover the mattresses with a plastic tarp to keep them dry.
In terms of tires, the City encourages residents to recycle them to prevent harmful chemicals from entering the environment. Each residential household can bring up to 8 tires, which must be detached from metal and rims.
The Clean Green Springfield initiative is also offering volunteer opportunities for litter cleanup and beautification efforts. According to the announcement, nearly 900 volunteers have already registered for various activities. Individuals, families, businesses, and service organizations are welcome to participate in roadside trash pickups, stream cleanups, neighborhood cleanup dropoff events, and the Neat Neighborhoods Competition. Registration for volunteer opportunities will be open through May 31.
