Senator Eric Schmitt has taken a significant step towards enhancing cooperation with Taiwan in the realm of space exploration. Introduced as an amendment to this year's FAA Reauthorization bill, the Taiwan and America Space Assistance (TASA) Act aims to bolster ties with the strategic Indo-Pacific ally and mitigate the space-related threats posed by China.
"Cooperation in space with a strategic partner such as Taiwan is undoubtedly a net-positive for the United States. The Taiwan and America Space Assistance Act expands our cooperation with a vital ally and allows for advancements and research in space with Taiwan’s growing space program. Empowering our allies through partnerships such as this ensures America remains the global leader in space and puts us in a better position in the new space race with China," expressed Senator Eric Schmitt.
The TASA Act proposes various measures to foster collaboration between the Taiwan Space Agency and key U.S. entities. This includes enabling extended cooperation between the Taiwan Space Agency and NASA, as well as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Additionally, the act provides a platform for the voluntary exchange of personnel from NASA and NOAA to the Taiwan Space Agency, facilitating the advancement of Taiwan's space capabilities. Furthermore, the act seeks to extend cooperation in satellite program development, space exploration, as well as atmospheric and weather programs.
By spearheading initiatives such as the TASA Act, Senator Schmitt is paving the way for strengthened partnerships and advancements in space technology, ultimately positioning the United States favorably in the evolving landscape of space exploration and competition.
