City’s Office of Belonging and Intercultural Development Shares Goals

The City of Springfield’s Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Taj Suleyman, presented the office’s annual report to the City Council, unveiling a significant change in the office's name to the Office of Belonging and Intercultural Development. Suleyman emphasized that this change signifies a deeper commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, stating, “This initiative reflects a dedication to creating a community where every resident feels respected, valued, and fundamentally belongs.”

The transformation aligns with the Guiding Principles, City Council Priorities, and the core functions of the office, focusing on community development, public service, and inclusivity as essential elements of effective governance. Suleyman highlighted the integration of these priorities, enhancing the strategies and operations of the Office of Belonging and Intercultural Development to better address the diverse needs of Springfield residents.

Grounded in five key principles recommended by the Mayor’s Initiative of Equity and Equality, the Office of Belonging and Intercultural Development emphasizes Dialogue and Understanding, Cultural Consciousness, Advocacy and Partnerships, Structural and Systemic Barriers, and Personal and Organizational Accountability.

The office’s operational framework encompasses various sectors aimed at providing comprehensive support, including Interdepartmental Support, DEI Organizational Development, Community Development and Partnerships, DEI Internal Teams, Mayor’s Commission on Human Rights & Community Relations, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance.

Suleyman outlined actionable goals for Springfield's advancement, including enhancing service delivery, elevating community engagement, promoting inclusive procurement practices, advocating for inclusive policies and practices, advancing workforce and employment opportunities, and providing professional development and conflict resolution support.

In an invitation to the Springfield community, Suleyman expressed, “We invite all members of the Springfield community to engage with the Office of Belonging and Intercultural Development as we strive to foster an inclusive environment where everyone thrives.”
