City and Greene County officials are coming together to celebrate the crucial role of 9-1-1 telecommunicators during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. The Springfield-Greene County 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Department is honoring their employees with various activities and events throughout the week.

Director April Ford highlighted the significance of the department, stating, "The department serves as a critical link between the community and 13 fire agencies and nine law enforcement agencies, fostering a seamless coordination that saves lives and protects property." She also emphasized the vast responsibilities of the telecommunicators, covering everything from fire and police response to initial medical assistance calls.

In July 2023, Governor Mike Parson signed Senate Bill 24, officially reclassifying all Missouri 9-1-1 telecommunicators as first responders. This reclassification provides them with essential access to mental health support, resources, and training.

Throughout 2023, the Springfield-Greene County 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Department handled a significant number of emergency calls. They fielded 268,825 9-1-1 emergency calls and managed nearly 460,000 calls for service and field-initiated events.

As part of the celebrations for National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, the department will receive an official proclamation signed by Mayor Ken McClure, City Manager Jason Gage, the Commissioners of Greene County, and Greene County Administrator Chris Coulter.

Citizens are reminded of the importance of contacting 9-1-1 in case of emergencies requiring police, fire, or emergency medical ambulance response. Additionally, Springfield-Greene County 9-1-1 is currently looking to hire experienced 9-1-1 dispatchers for part-time positions.

The Springfield-Greene County 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Department plays a critical role in ensuring public safety and saving lives, and their dedication and service are being recognized and celebrated during this special week.
